Competitors will commonly use manufactured palm thatch. This type thatch has been woven into a complete umbrella and placed on the palapa in one peace. This gives the appearance of a thin or FAKE looking palapa and allows some sun light through along with rain. Senior palapa uses authentic palm frondsthat are still green when cultivated. This allows the palm frond to be easily placed on the palapa and not crack or tear during construction. Once secure to the palapa the palm fronds begin to dry and conform to the structure.
